- KNIGHTS: 2
Middletown Boys Soccer finished a very trying week with a 2-0 home win over Frederick.
Coming off a hard-fought game the night before, with tired legs and some injured players, not to mention a very confident, very talented and strong Cadet team as an opponent, it would be easy to make excuses not to put in a great effort. The Black and Orange tapped into their spirit and reserves to defeat a very good FHS team.
The first half saw Frederick looking every bit the team they've been made out to be, but it would be the Knights who would strike first midway through the first half. Owen Smith sent a ball in over the backs that a charging Cooper Fisher nearly got to, forcing a corner kick. Off the ensuing corner, Smith's driven ball was headed by Matthew Barlow into the turf, one-bouncing into the net--1-0!
The score would remain at a one-goal edge until midway through the second half. In a crazy sequence, the Cadets nearly tied it up but for a leaping save by Daniel Robison. Going down the other end, less than a minute later Logan Doing would earn MHS a free kick of their own just outside the box. Smith blasted a shot that was well saved but Bryce Martin was first to the rebound--2-0! Robison was called on again immediately after the kickoff, getting a hand on a curling shot bound for the net. Barlow was also there with a great block on the empty net to deny a sure goal.
With defensive heading in back from Tom Kovudakevych, Nikita Miller, Drew Keele, Barlow and others, plus defensive tackling by Graham Brown, Tyler Michael, Patrick Beckman, Fisher, Ben Watts, Matt Bedri, Holden Coblentz and others, and effort all over the field defensively, including up top by Ethan Fontenot, the Knights together would make it two shutouts in two.
Up next (someone it doesn't seem possible) is an even tougher week! Road trips to defending 3A Champ Urbana and CMC foe Williamsport will continue to test us as we continue to grow. Rest up and good luck Knights!
JV: The JVers fell to 0-2 but their effort and spirit was worthy of a win. FHS scored late to win 1-0 but a great defensive effort and response by the JVs. Keep working hard guys!
