MANCHESTER VALLEY: 4

Middletown Boys Soccer opened its season with a 4-1 loss to Manchester Valley in the opener of the Ford/Sheffler Holiday Tournament.  On the neutral grass of Walkersville High School, it was all Mavericks of Carroll County from the start.  By the time the first half had finished, it was 2 goals to zero for MVHS and they seemingly looked on their way to easy win.  Credit to the Knights who found themselves a bit in the second half.  A rocket volley off the post foreshadowed the Black and Orange goal that would come.  Off a deflected shot from Owen Smith, Bryce Martin was there to calmly slot home.  At 2-1, it was game on.  But the Mavericks were still dangerous on their end and got a third midway through the half.  With MHS putting everything forward including the kitchen sink, the microwave, the fridge, and anything not bolted to the ground, the second goal would not come.  Manchester Valley (coached by MHS alum Andrew Harrell) was relentless and made it 4-1.

In the tournament format, the match was technically not over as both teams went up to win a bonus point off penalty kicks.  Showing some great pride, the Knights won the shootout 3-2.  PKs were made by Ben Watts, Dom Rudakevych and Nikita Miller.  Daniel Robison saved two penalties.  With the win (and 3 points for every goal up to 3), the Mavericks earned 6 points to the Knights' 2.  Up next tomorrow is an equally tough match up with Century.  Go Knights!
